How Do I Use Ghee?
Five delicious everyday ways to enjoy ghee . . .
✦
If you’ve recently discovered ghee—or you’ve got a jar of Yoghee sitting on your counter and you’re wondering how to make the most of it—you’re in the right place. Ghee is one of the most versatile fats in the kitchen, and once you start using it, you begin to realise why it’s so beloved in traditional cooking (and why it deserves a place in your daily routine too).
Here are five simple, tasty, and nourishing ways to use ghee every single day . . .
1. Spread it like butter
One of the easiest ways to use ghee is simply as a spread! Slather it on toast, pancakes, crumpets, muffins—anywhere you’d normally use butter. If you really want a treat, try brown butter ghee on a slice of dark sourdough rye. The nutty caramel notes are next level. Plus, ghee melts beautifully and is instantly spreadable since it doesn’t require refrigeration.
2. Swap it for your usual cooking oil
Ghee makes an incredible all-purpose cooking fat. It has a naturally high smoke point [250°C], meaning it stays stable even at high temperatures. It’s perfect for frying, sautéing, stir-frying, and roasting (in the oven or air fryer). Simply add a spoonful to a hot pan and it will melt almost instantly. For roasting, add a dollop to your tray and let it warm for a couple of minutes before tossing your veggies or meats. You get crisp edges, rich flavour, and none of the harsh notes that come from overheated oils.
3. Use it to finish your food
This is where ghee really shines. A small spoonful stirred into hot mashed potatoes, warm basmati rice (hello kitchari), porridge, or drizzled over veg and meats takes your meal from good to deeply nourishing. This method brings out ghee’s warm, buttery aroma and enhances the flavours of everything it touches.
In Ayurvedic tradition, ghee is even used as a supplement to help increase the absorption of nutrients—another reason people enjoy it melted directly onto their food.
4. Blend it into warm drinks
A lesser-known but truly cosy way to use ghee is blending it into your favourite warm drink. Try:
Hot milk with spices (cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg…)
Golden milk / turmeric latte
Your morning coffee
Blending makes it creamy and comforting—like a hug in a mug.
5. Straight off the spoon
Yes… really.
If you’re looking to add more high-quality fats to your diet, a teaspoon of ghee alongside your meal is a simple and delicious option. Think of it as a nourishing side in its own right.
Don’t knock it till you try it—and definitely try it with Yoghee.
And finally . . . a note on quality
Not all ghee is created equal. The ways I’ve shared above—especially spreading it like butter or enjoying it straight off the spoon—I only recommend with good-quality ghee.
Many commercial ghees are made using sped-up industrial methods like centrifugation, often starting with lower-quality butter. This can mean a product that goes rancid more quickly (because the milk solids haven’t had proper time to separate) and one that simply doesn’t deliver the same flavour, aroma, or potential benefits.
I never actually set out to create Yoghee. I just couldn’t find a ghee that was made from grass-fed butter and tasted genuinely delicious. So I started making it myself—using the best grass-fed, cultured butter I could find, cooked slowly in small batches and cooled the traditional way. And then Yoghee just… happened. I thought, people have to try this.
